Scam Awareness

1. Do not provide ANY information to ANYONE who calls you on the phone.

Phone numbers can be “spoofed” (made to appear as if they come from someone you know and trust). If you receive a call from someone who asks you any questions or asks for information, do not answer them – no matter how urgent or important the situation may seem. Instead, ask for their name and/or the name of the organization they represent. Do a Google search for the organization’s official website and call the business or organization directly to confirm the authenticity of the call.

2. Never send money when contacted by phone, email, etc.

3. Never give out personal information to unfamiliar companies or unknown persons such as:

Credit Card Numbers & Expiration Dates

Bank Account Numbers

Dates of Birth

Social Security Numbers

4. Never pay with a debit card for services sold over the phone / internet.
If you must shop online or by phone, never use a debit card. Instead, consider using a credit card with fraud protection. Remember, legitimate companies will not call you to request unusual forms of payment, such as gift cards or travelers’ cheques.

5. Always take your time before making a decision.

Legitimate companies won’t pressure you to make a snap decision and will be happy to answer your questions. If unsure, ask a trusted friend or family member what they think first.

6. If you have information about a known or suspected fraud, report it to law enforcement.
